RESEARCHERS #1: Mark Klein - NSA & Domestic Surveillance: part 1 Guest:Mark Klein https://sites.google.com/site/markklein2009/Home https://goo.gl/8TERpd Book: Wiring Up The Big Brother Machine...And Fighting It Whistleblower Mark Klein tells the story of the illegal government spying apparatus installed at an AT&T office by the National Security Agency, and his battle to bring it to light and protect Americans’ 4th Amendment rights. After the New York Times revealed in 2005 that the NSA was spying on Americans’ phone calls and e-mail without Constitutionally-required court warrants, the Bush administration openly defended this practice which also violated the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. All details of the highly secret program remained hidden from the public—until Klein came forward. A technician for over 22 years at telecom giant AT&T, Klein was working in the Internet room in San Francisco in 2003 and discovered the NSA was vacuuming everyone’s communications into a secret room, and he had the documents to prove it (sample pages included). He went to the media in 2006, and then became a witness in a lawsuit brought against the company by the Electronic Frontier Foundation. RESEARCHERS #2: William Binney - NSA & Domestic Surveillance: part 2 Guest: William Binney In the 2nd part of our NSA trilogy, I am talking with NSA whistleblower William Binney. He is a former NSA official who resigned from his position in 2001. While he was working for the agency, he was one of the developers of a system called ‘ThinThread' which was designed to collect “actionable intelligence” with privacy protection. However, instead of ThinThread, the NSA decided to develop multi-billion dollar system called Trailblazer that never became operational. Today Binney is known as an outspoken critic of NSA data collection policies. Researchers #4: dr. Suzanne Simard - Communication Between Trees Guest: dr. Suzanne Simard http://profiles.forestry.ubc.ca/person/suzanne-simard/ https://goo.gl/VKFJL4 The New Yorker Article by Michael Pollan: The Intelligent Plant https://goo.gl/WS1bnZ In this episode we are talking with dr. Suzanne Simard - professor of forest ecology from the University of British Columbia. We talked about scientific theories and experiments regarding communication between plants and trees. Suzanne's research is focused on so called mother trees - older trees in forests which are distributing nutrients through underground mycorrhizal networks. Those important findings are opening new sets of questions and implications regarding intelligence of plants and environment that we share with them. Suzanne also described her close encounters with skeptics after her papers on this subject were published. |
